I would say in this case, if I was last, and if points were worms, then I would be better off not being early.

Benefits of being early: You sometimes get to catch the host before they are quite ready. You get to find out what the plans are for the entire evening before everyone else. You get some one-on-one time with the host before things get busy with other guests.
Benefits of being late: You get to make an entrance & you get to play the blame game with your spouse as to whom made you late :)
I prefer to be early if at all possible, whether it be a social function or a job interview. Unfortunately, where social functions are concerned, I think it is my lot in life to always be late...
